Towards the turn of the century crowds were drawn to Manly and Wynnum to swim in the calm waters of Moreton Bay. At this time the foreshore was lined with changing boxes, the use of which cost a penny. At this early stage bathers had to make sure of ladders to climb down in the water to bathe.
Early holiday makers to Manly and Wynnum stayed in tents which they pitched along the foreshore. In actual fact tourism was one of the major generators of early industry within Manly and Wynnum. The large number of holiday visitors making their way to Manly resulted in a building boom of accommodation boarding houses.
Early guest houses were Wynnum House and the Ingeleston Guest house which opened in 1915 and was one of the largest guest houses built. Catering to the increasing number of day trippers and holiday makers a picture theatre opened in Wynnum 1915 known as the Star Theatre.
The now famous Manly Village with a variety of trendy shops, restaurants and cafes started to emerge as a commercial centre during the post war years. During this time a cinema was opened on the Esplanade.
Back in 1926 tidal baths were built, however unfortunately these were destroyed by a cyclone in 1959.
Extremely popular sand castle competitions were held in the 1930’s promoted by the still current Brisbane newspapers, the Telegraph and the Courier Mail.
Manly Harbour Development
The well sheltered Moreton Bay became increasingly popular for boating around the 1950’s leading to the Manly Boat Harbour being built in 1958. In addition substantial tidal walls were built in order to deepen the harbour making even more attractive as a boating destination.
An important development that generated visitor growth occurred in 1962 with the beginning of the Manly boat harbour. Boat clubs at Manly included the East Coast Boat Club, the Royal Queensland Boat Club, the Moreton Bay Trailer Club as well as the Wynnum Yacht Club.

Manly today is still a very popular holiday destination for interstate and now also international visitors to Queensland. Before European settlement the Aboriginal Mipirimm people occupied Brisbane’s bayside in a semi-nomadic way. The settlement of Europeans in this area started in 1860.
The first sale of land in Manly began back in 1882. By around 1900 the population in Manly was close to 1,000 people. Even at this time however the population in Manly was much higher on the weekends and during the holidays due to the number of visitors attracted to the area.

The Hastings Hotel (now known as the Wynnum Hotel) was the first hotel in the area opening in 1882. The first retail shop opened in 1885 in King Street. The infamous Waterloo Bay Hotel in Wynnum was constructed by George Gibbs in 1889 and opened for business on the 6th of November 1889. It was later extended in 1918.
